Interested in a trained Built Environment workforce?

BACH is always ready to discuss options to improve the Built Environment workforce.  We are looking to work with employers, material and tools supplies, and those working on greening the workforce.  Ian Stirling 07539143184 or ia***@ba**.uk

Working with Employers

BACH Members from FE colleges and training providers in England and Wales collaborate with employers, supporting them to face ongoing industry challenges. They manage the majority of learners studying the construction curriculum, training and upskilling the future construction workforce.

Working with the Construction Leadership Council (CLC)

The UK Government recognises the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) as the industry group for the whole of construction, including building, civil engineering, BSE and suppliers. It reports through the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

One of its essential functions is skills and it has a People and Skills Group chaired by Nick Roberts, CEO if Travis Perkins. BACH is an active Member of this Group and attends the meetings as well as, more specifically, works on the Route into Industry sub-group.

Working with Local Employers

Colleges and groups of Colleges are working locally with employers to understand their specific training needs in the local area. This can be direct with the employers a College is already working with or wider groups that might be focusing on retrofit, electric vehicle points or hydrogen etc.

Working with the Construction Industry Training Board

BACH works closely with the Construction Industry Training Board as a valued member, and CITB’s Head of Education and Training, Graham McPhail, a Past-Chair of our organisation, sits on our leadership committee.

In 2019 CITB launched its ‘big six’ campaign to attract a new generation of workers to the construction industry. This levy-funded initiative outlines the ‘big six skills challenges’ identified by CITB research, the most important skills challenges faced by the construction industry, all of which are key drivers for BACH too, including:

  • making construction an attractive career for a broader range of recruits

  • developing a ‘site-ready’ workforce

  • getting more construction learners to join the industry

  • growing the number and diversity of apprentices

  • helping smaller firms invest in the training that can transform their business

  • boosting the number of assessors for vocational qualifications.

Explaining how it will work, the CITB said: “This big, bold campaign will highlight the many fantastic and well-paid career opportunities available, reaching groups who have traditionally been underrepresented in the industry.

“It will provide clear information on how to get into construction, including through apprenticeships and work experience, and will showcase the support available, such as higher CITB funding rates for apprenticeships.”

Contact your local BACH member for advice on training, qualifications and apprenticeships available to your workforce.
